April 2009

The Charlottesville Area Tennis Association’s Jump Start QuickStart Tennis Initiative has officially unveiled Go Bananas for QuickStart! — a campaign to expand the QuickStart Tennis format to include a nutrition and hydration component. QuickStart already integrated tennis instruction with fitness and conditioning using agility, balance and coordination drills (ABCDs).

At this year’s QuickStart Tennis Day at Darden Towe Park, kids 10 and under will be taught to eat like tennis players on the court. Whole Foods is generously donating bananas, whole-grain cereal bars and water for 120 kids for the event.

Lynda Harrill, CATA QuickStart Coordinator, says, “Applying for a grant from the Childhood Obesity Task Force was the inspiration for Go Bananas for QuickStart! Adding nutrition and hydration to the mix seemed like a natural. There’s no better food than bananas for tennis players and most kids love them. We’re going to use tennis players as nutritional role models for kids starting with bananas. Want to be a great tennis player? Eat like a great tennis player!”

CATA is partnering with the UVa Health System to create Go Bananas for QuickStart! Nutrition Cards for kids. UVa’s Heatline outreach people will be at QuickStart Day again this year to provide information on hydration and heat-stroke prevention. CATA is also working on establishing strategic alliances with banana importers, cereal manufacturers and bottled and enhanced water companies for financial support.

CATA’s Jump Start QuickStart Tennis Initiative will take QuickStart Tennis to 16,000 kids in 42 elementary schools in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson and Orange counties and the City of Charlottesville over the next three years.

Winter Excellence Program a big success (again)

Over 90 junior players, from age 10 through high school, participated in this year's program on Sundays through the winter at the Boar's Head Sports Club courts.  Again this year, CATA provided a scholarship for a week at Brian Boland's Nike Tennis Camp here in Charlottesville this summer.  We received many excellent entries in the essay contest for the scholarship, and Chi Zhang was the winner.  We loved her statements that:

"I believe that the Nike Tennis Camp Scholarship should be for those with a pure love and passion for the sport.  Attending the camp will give me the opportunity to play even more tennis this summer, and it"ll give me the chance to play with people from other places who share the same love as me for the sport.  To me tennis isn"t just another sport.  It's something that requires not only athleticism, but also strategy, endurance, and most importantly-passion."

QuickStart classes held at Venable Elementary School

Ever see 65 second graders sit still?  It happened here, well only for a minute before doing fitness and conditioning drills to improve agility, balance, hand-eye coordination, reaction time and stamina, followed by rallying using CATA’s portable nets and the “kid-sized” equipment from CATA QuickStart Loaner Kits.  Click here for more details.
